Our family dentists are trained to treat a wide range of dental conditions, including preventive care, restorative care, and cosmetic dentistry. We also provide education and counseling on oral hygiene and healthy lifestyle habits.
Benefits of Family Dentistry
There are many benefits to choosing a family dentist for your family’s dental care.
Here are just a few:
Convenience: Family dentists offer a wide range of services under one roof, so you can get all your family’s dental care in one place. This can save you time and money.
Personalized care: Family dentists take the time to get to know you and your family’s dental needs. They will develop a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs.
Established rapport: Family dentists build relationships with their patients over time. This can make it easier for you to feel comfortable and at ease during your dental appointments.
Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry is a specialized branch of dental care that focuses on improving the aesthetics of teeth, gums, and the overall smile.
Through a variety of procedures, cosmetic dentists aim to enhance the appearance of teeth, address imperfections, and create a more attractive and confident smile.
Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures
Cosmetic dentistry encompasses a range of procedures designed to address various dental concerns and enhance the overall smile:
Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening is a popular procedure that lightens the color of teeth, removing stains and discoloration caused by food, beverages, and aging.
Various teeth whitening options are available, including professional in-office treatments and at-home whitening kits.
Dental Bonding: Dental bonding involves applying a tooth-colored resin material to the surface of a tooth to restore its shape, size, or color.
Bonding can be used to repair chipped or cracked teeth, close gaps between teeth, and even lengthen the appearance of short teeth.
Sedation Dentistry
Oral sedation, also known as conscious sedation, is a valuable tool employed in dentistry to promote patient comfort and facilitate dental procedures. It utilizes medication administered orally, typically in pill form, to induce a state of relaxation and anxiety reduction.
During oral sedation, patients remain conscious and able to respond to verbal cues from the dentist. However, they may experience a sense of detachment from the surroundings and slurred speech. Additionally, oral sedation often leads to amnesia, where patients have little to no memory of the procedure itself.
Common medications used for oral sedation belong to the benzodiazepine class, such as triazolam or lorazepam. These medications act by calming the central nervous system, specifically targeting areas associated with fear and anxiety. The dosage of the medication is carefully calibrated based on the individual patient’s needs and medical history.
Oral sedation offers several advantages. It is a minimally invasive technique, with the medication taken orally rather than requiring intravenous (IV) administration. This can be particularly beneficial for patients with needle phobia. Furthermore, oral sedation effectively reduces anxiety and gag reflex, allowing the dentist to work more efficiently and comfortably.
Orthodontics
Do you have trouble biting or struggle with speech issues? Are you self-conscious about facial asymmetry or jaws that don’t align right? Our team at Southdale Family Dentistry offer treatments for these kinds of irregularities or malocclusions. Dr. Cook has been providing Orthodontic Treatment for over 20 years!
What Is Orthodontics?
It’s a dentistry branch that handles alignment problems that affect your teeth, jaws, or face. Treatments typically focus on correcting malocclusions, allowing you to speak, chew, and smile with greater comfort and confidence.
What Types of Problems Orthodontics Addresses
Our Southdale Family Dentistry team provides care for several jaw, face, and bite irregularities, including all of the following.
Underbites
This happens when your lower jaw extends farther than your upper jaw, causing your lower teeth to close in front of your upper teeth.
Overbites
Your upper teeth should close in front of your lower teeth. But when you have an overbite, this overlap is excessive, resulting in a deeper bite.
Crossbites
When some of your upper teeth end up behind your lower teeth while biting, this is known as a crossbite.
Open Bite
Your teeth should touch when you bite down. But having an open bite means this doesn’t happen. Your lower and upper teeth in the front of your mouth don’t touch at all, even when your mouth is fully closed.
Dental Implants
A dental implant can be one of two types of dental work. An implant is technically a metal screw that is affixed to the jawbone in a surgical procedure.
This implant is used to attach a tooth prosthetic that is screwed onto the permanently fused screw.
A dental implant provides a stable foundation for a denture, bridge, or crown. It looks and acts like a tooth root, offering tissue support under and on the jawbone.
While patients can opt for a single tooth implant, the full All-on-4 implant is well suited for patients getting dentures. Implants can replace one or all of your teeth. In addition, your dentist may be able to provide all-inclusive dental implants and dentures in just one day.
All-on-4 Implants
Slightly different from all-inclusive dental implants, an All-on-4 implant provides four dental implants. These implants are positioned at the rear of the jaw and the top and bottom jaws. The purpose of All-on-4 dental implants is to provide more stability for a full set of top and bottom dentures. The patient can remove the dentures for cleaning and maintenance while gaining additional support throughout the day.
Invisalign
Invisalign clear aligners have revolutionized the field of teeth straightening, offering a virtually invisible alternative to traditional metal braces. This system utilizes a series of custom-made, clear plastic trays designed to gradually shift teeth into their desired positions.
Invisalign Treatment
The Invisalign treatment process begins with a comprehensive consultation with our dentists. During this visit, digital scans or impressions are taken of the patient’s teeth to create a 3D model of their dental structure. This model is then used to map out the planned tooth movements and design a series of customized aligners.
Each aligner in the series is crafted from a smooth, BPA-free plastic material known for its comfort and durability. Patients wear a new set of aligners for approximately one to two weeks, with each set applying gentle, constant pressure to the teeth, meticulously guiding them towards their ideal placement.
Invisalign offers several distinct advantages over traditional braces. The clear aligners are virtually invisible, making them a popular choice for adults and image-conscious individuals who desire a more discreet treatment option. Additionally, the removable nature of the aligners allows for greater ease of maintaining oral hygiene and enjoying dietary freedom during treatment.
Overall, Invisalign clear aligners represent a significant advancement in orthodontic treatment. They offer a comfortable, discreet, and effective method for achieving a straighter, healthier smile. However, a consultation with a qualified dental professional is essential to determine if Invisalign is the right choice for a particular case.
Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies are something that no one ever wants to face. Of course, when this does happen, it can be an extremely difficult situation as you will not have the proper time allotted to fix the issue. Pediatric dental emergencies, in more ways than one, can seem like an even tougher challenge. When it comes to the healthcare of your child, it is difficult for you as a parent or guardian to ascertain what extent of danger your child is in.
Our team is proud to offer dental emergency services that will help put your mind at ease and resolve the situation, no matter the urgency or problem.
What are Some Common Types of Emergencies?
Our team is well-versed in many dental emergencies, especially those that are common to children. The question becomes, how do you know whether something constitutes an emergency? In addition to the list below, it is important to note that it is always better to be safe than sorry. If your child is young, and cannot communicate how they feel or the danger they are in – this is usually a tell-tale sign that a professional service may be required. Here are some common dental emergencies that are common in children.
Fractured, Loose, and Chipped Tooth
This is common among children that are young but have most of their baby teeth grown in. The enamel and strength of the tooth can be compromised, and rough play can sometimes chip or fracture the tooth. If this occurs, it is best to immediately rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a compress to reduce the swelling. Save the fractured component, if possible, and give us a call.
Dental Fillings
Dental fillings are used to repair tooth decay and restore the tooth’s function and appearance. Several types of filling materials are available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
Here are some of the most common types:
Composite Resin Fillings
Composition: A tooth-colored material made of plastic resin and glass particles.
Advantages: Aesthetically pleasing, bonds directly to the tooth structure, and can be customized to match the color of your natural teeth.
Disadvantages: Less durable than amalgam fillings, may require more frequent replacement, and can be more expensive.
Ceramic Fillings
Composition: Porcelain or ceramic material.
Oral Sleep Appliance
Oral appliances in dentistry refer to corrective devices designed to treat conditions like snoring or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Because the tissues of your mouth relax while you’re asleep, this can cause either vibrations that lead to snoring or a blockage of air from narrowed passages.
Getting treatment for this can not only help you stop unwanted noises at night, it can also be the key to improving your health. A retainer, mouth guard, or other appliance can make it possible for you to take uninterrupted breaths for as long as you’re asleep.
What Is an Oral Appliance?
An oral appliance will fit over your teeth and support your jaw while you’re sleeping. It’s essentially moving your mouth and throat into the right position, so your airway stays open.
These devices can be custom-fit to your body, and they’re proven to reduce nighttime disruptions.
Whether you’re interested in an oral appliance to help a partner sleep a little easier or because you’re exhausted during the day, a qualified dentist can make it easy to get the products you need. They may work with a sleep physician to test your breathing patterns or they may work with you one-on-one. Regardless of how you get the device, it can be a key step toward better rest.
Benefits of Oral Appliance Therapy
Oral appliances are typically easy to wear, light, portable, and convenient. Because apnea and snoring are common conditions, the point of these products is to encourage people to use them on a regular basis.
